The basic setup of Last Year: The Nightmare is that a group of five teenagers finds themselves trapped in an alternate version of their hometown of Forest Hills. It’s certainly a scary situation, but nothing that warrants immediate concern.
That quickly changes once they reach the grounds of their high school and discover that they’re not alone in this twisted reality after all. No help is coming, and no immediate means of escape is available. If they’re going to survive, they’re going to have to turn and fight back against the killers stalking them.
Perusing through these newly released screenshots reveals a little bit about the killers and the environment in which they stalk their prey. If the grounds and classrooms of East Side High School are any indication, then it’s obvious that these killers have been very successful in the past. There’s too much blood staining the walls and floors for this group to be the very first. As for the kids themselves, they’ll actually have some means of defending themselves. This isn’t exactly like Friday the 13th; each side has a very different set of strengths and weaknesses.
Each of these killers appears to be very imposing in their own way too. “The Giant” is exactly that, an intimidating hulk of a beast. “Stalker” has its creepy hooded-stranger look down pat, and the “Slasher” is the standard horror movie axe-murderer; there’s really not much that needs to be done in order to make an axe-murderer scary. Each projects a terrifying presence when compared to the teenagers they’re hunting, so it should lead to some startling encounters in-game.
Last Year: The Nightmare was already playable earlier this year, and its release date is still set for sometime in fall this year. So, it shouldn’t be too long before horror fans will be able to get their hands on it. Dead by Daylight already does something similar, but this might just be different enough to carve out its own space in the horror genre.
